“Model and promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital age communication and collaboration tools to interact locally and globally with students, peers, parents, and the larger community” – ISTE Coaching Indicator 5c
Digital education holds some of the greatest promise to promote cultural diversity, understanding, and global awareness. This was something I became aware of very early in my course of studies in the Digital Education Leadership program at SPU and my Digital Education mission statement from first quarter reflects this. The three key elements of my mission statement revolve around “promote[ing] access to and excellence in the use of digital technologies,” “foster[ing] a climate of inclusion, participation, compassion, and academic and personal integrity in the use of digital technologies,” and “harness[ing] the power of digital technology to help create a sense of community; to communicate, cooperate, and collaborate with others in the school community and around the world.” Based on ISTE Coaching standard 5, these goals demonstrate my dedication to all three indicators from the very beginning of the program.
Later in the course of my studies, I had the opportunity to implement the collaborative element in my Global Collaborative Project for EDTC 6103. The goal of this project was to have us think of how we could incorporate indicator 5c into our current education setting. The project report below demonstrates my strategy for how I could promote diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness by using digital age tools with student from another school. While the project was ultimately not implemented due to lack of time, I look forward to using these tech tools in the future as a way to model effective digital citizenship.
